At first, my dream was to become a novelist. I've been writing since I was a kid, and it was what I always insisted I become. So it is written...and whatever else Ramses says in "The Ten Commandments."
Then my wife had me walk through an art gallery in Charleston a few years ago. The ripple effect turned into a wave with white caps, and it capsized my writer's journey.
While I'm still trying to fasten the pin that says "artist" to my shirt so I seem legit, I have fully accepted the role of illustrator and designer.
Hi, I'm Evan Williams (no relation to the whisky) and this is my digital studio.
As a journalism teacher, I've been teaching design trends and basic principles to middle school students for over 16 years. I've been able to practice what I preach as the secretary and designer for a nonprofit in my city of Anderson, Ind. called A Town Center. It's a gallery space that features artists in residence, guest artists, classes, concerts, and many more events that bring the community together using the arts. During the month of August 2019, I got to fill the role of guest artist for my very first show: Of Monsters and Produce. One year later, I hosted my second show Motley online due to the pandemic.
Joining the board of directors has allowed me to leave my writing behind for a while to pick up a pencil, pen, brush, or marker and take on the joy of painting and illustration. While I continue to work on pieces of my own, some for fun, others for sale at my shop, I want to continue my journey as a graphic designer as well.
Until then, I'll be over there if you need me.
